i think the final thing is that romney put obamacare back on the map in this election. this election was all about the economy. now it's about the economy and obamacare. and particularly the health care rationing board. i think that was very effective. i think those strategic adjustments are far more important than the good feeling that you have of romney after this debate. >> greta: when should we expect to see the new poll results that reflect the response to the debate? >> yes. they will. have you to remember, rasmussen, the poll thaig think is the most accurate, is a moving five-day sample. so if you will take a week before we have the full post debate polling. but there will be other polls. you will see a big shifting in the polls. joining it's retrievable by obama. i don't think you get a second chance to make a first impression. and i think that romney really scored. i thought when he explained to people that tax cut on the rich would not be on the rich, it was a tax increase on the rich, it was a tax increase on small business employers and they employ 50% of th

the most important number may be romney's 47%. the deep dive down memory lane for the good, bad and ugly of the modern presidential debate, the winners, losers, zingers and the awkward that help decide. good morning from the university of denver. a beautiful campus here, debate day, wednesday, october 3. this is "the daily rundown." i'm chuck todd. let's get to my first read. everything has been said about the importance of tonight's debate. now it is up to the candidates themselves who will meet on the university of denver on the same stage. romney has inched up slightly in our "wall street journal" poll. the bad news when you dig deeper you see the structural problems facing romney as he tries to catch up and how damaging the 47% remark was and is to the campaign. is there such a thing as a commanding lead? if so he has it. president obama's job approval rating is at 49%. 48% disapprove of his performance. 40% believe the country is headed in the right direction. the highest number we recorded in 3 1/2 years. 53% still believe t

we have to remember, mitt romney triumphed in a republican presidential field that was the worst republican presidential field in the history of the republican party. those are the debates he won. he was the one on the stage who did not look outright insane, compared to the rest of them. that isn't going to work for him tonight. he's going against the best debater mitt romney has ever been up against in his life. this is going to be, i think, a really great debate. >> preparing for this, i went back and looked at some of the 1994 debates between romney and kennedy, looking at some of that to see, you know, how does he deal with a democratic opponent? we've seen him debate a lot of republicans, but not a lot of democrats. and if it's half as fun as it was between him and ted kennedy, we are in for a very, very fun night ahead. lawrence, thank you for that, particularly on the rules. i think that was a really important point. we'll talk with you again soon. we are going to be getting more specifics from nbc's chuck todd in just a minute in terms of which each of the campaigns is aiming at ton

what do you say to mitt romney? >> well, first of all, i do think the start of the presidential campaign in some ways start wd the debate the other night. i think only partisans watch the convention. a lot of the real undecided voters started to tune in. he had a good night, he can build on that. i think what he has to do, though, is not just become the biggest critic of the president. i think other people can do that effectively. he has to start showing his vision and how to give hope to people of why america is going to be better under mitt romney and also let them see him personally. get to know him and see that he's actually a pretty darn likeable guy once you get to know him. >> can he win from here, do you think, john? >> oh, absolutely. i mean, we have already seen some of the polls that came out today since the debates show a great tightening. we have also seen there's been a big influx of money for mitt romney which will for the first time put him on an even parity with obama on advertising, and like i said
